Overview
Description

Ferric chloride belongs to the hexagonal crystal system. When the ferric chloride aqueous solution is diluted, it can be hydrolyzed to form brown flocculent ferric hydroxide precipitate. Soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, ether and isopropyl ether, soluble in liquid sulfur trioxide, ethylamine, aniline, insoluble in glycerol, phosphorus trichloride and stannous chloride, slightly soluble in carbon disulfide. The aqueous solution is acidic. Ferric chloride without free chlorine has a slight odor, but is not pungent. Ferric chloride containing free chlorine has a pungent odor and is mainly used as a treatment agent for drinking water and wastewater, as an oxidant and mordant in the dye industry, and as a catalyst and oxidant for organic synthesis.
