The toxicity of cadmium-based quantum dots limits their useful applications, and we provide cadmium-free quaternary quantum dots consisting of a CuInZnS core surrounded by a ZnS shell. Compared to other quantum dots, these cadmium-free quantum dots have almost ideal luminescence properties because of their strong light absorption properties and photostability over a broad excitation wavelength range. These cadmium-free quaternary quantum dots are widely used in many fields such as in vivo diagnostics, product packaging, and display.
